Cat Cams offers two camshaft product lines to cover the market needs in a flexible and cost effective way.
Where pricing is an important issue for 'conventional' applications, we provide high quality chilled cast iron camshafts. Typical example would be fast road and moderate competition camshafts. It is not a matter of material quality, but rather availability of castings with sufficient material on the camlobes as these are only available for a limited number of big volume applications.
For more demanding applications, such as full race projects, we also dispose of a steel billet production line. Imagine you 're building a full race V8 engine with a flat crankshaft on 180°. Angular position of the camlobes has to be on 90° instead of 45°, so you need other billets. Beside casting availability, there are some other reasons to prefer steel billet camshafts. For instance when weight is an issue: a hole of 20mm over a length of 400mm saves about 1kg, so we get close to the weight of assembled hollow lightweight camshafts. However, the advantage of this 'monobloc' steel billets is an important improvement in stiffness and strength, allowing higher acceleration cam profiles. And maybe you prefer to have the flange of your adjustable gear in one piece with the camshaft instead of using a third press-on adapter piece (e.g. VW16v). Or the look of steel parts is important to you and you want to eliminate the risk of a broken casting.
